We take 90 degrees spin and beneath we sight the heads of giraffes over the cover of acacia trees as they feed on the leaves, scarcely observing us moving in the air in the sky above.
After approximately one hour afloat, the journey ends with a bouncy landing bringing us back to the ground. Finally we crawl out of the carrier to a champagne breakfast. The splendor is that this breakfast occurs in the wild, no matter where you land, and it's prepared as you see with the burners that moments before held you suspended in the air. What a way to begin our morning safari!
"In recent times, there has been improvement in hot air balloon features. The furnaces are more efficient and calmer than the earliest balloon safaris" explains the captain.
"One of the things that surprises a good number of first-time balloonists is the absolute tranquility, the peace as you hover above the savanah, the woodland and the rivers of the Masai Mara. The noises underneath drift clearly up-wards: a lion's bellow, elephants crashing through the shrubs, baboons perched on the tops of the trees. If you're fortunate you will ascend high above for the sight of a life-time. " the captain offers.
After year end rains, the vegetation is flourishing green as we drive back to our camp viewing wildlife en-route. It is contrasting as these are the same grasslands which, in November, were golden, parched and hash.
Unexpectedly we run into a mother cheetah marking her territory, spraying the area with urine. Finished, she checks our company and then makes a soft chirping sound as she proceeds on her way through the thicket. Maybe she is searching for her litter.
The plains are swarming with elephants, buffaloes, topi, wildebeests and other antelopes and the scene is just great.
